The UK National Quantum Technology Hub for Sensors and Metrology will be one of four world-leading development centres to receive further funding over five years to create and develop quantum technology.
The £80 million in funding will help to boost university research and, in turn, businesses, to develop quantum technology which will essentially enable people to lead healthier, safer and faster lives in the future.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond announced the funding on 6 September 2018. He said:
“The UK is a world leader in quantum technologies, but others are investing hard to catch up with us. The £80 million in new funding that I have announced will ensure that we remain at the forefront of this exciting technological revolution.”
Subject to approval, the funding will give certainty to researchers and will enable them to seamlessly continue their work in developing core quantum technology.
Quantum technology has been identified as a future technology which forms a key part of the government’s modern Industrial Strategy.
